Digestive system health guide/eating program and what I’ve learned from “Great Taste No Pain” by author and researcher/nutritionist Sherry Brescia and my own experience through implementing the strategies in her book.
Digestive System 101
When you consume a protein meal for example meats, eggs, dairy products your stomach produces acidic juices to break them down. On the other hand when you consume carbohydrate food like potatoes and breads, your stomach produces alkaline juices to break them down. Eating meat and potatoes (protein and starches together) (The Standard American Diet) “burger and fries, steak and a baked potato, and any sandwich “bread and meat with lettuce” reeks havoc on the digestive system and it has a very hard time trying to do its job.
Digestive System and High School Science
When you had fundamental chemistry in high school you learned that if you combine an acid (to break down protein) along with an alkaline (to break down carbs) together they neutralize one another (no digestive action). Your stomach will keep pumping in additional acid and alkaline juices attempting to break down their food type, and the food isn’t going to digest in the appropriate amount of time and will actually start to rot within your gut. This process produces lots of mucous which will get assimilated into the body which can cause gas and bloating, very foul smelling flatulence, aggravate asthma and may cause bad breath. This invariably in the long run leads to various digestive as well as other health problems.
Impeding the Digestive System
So, from what we’ve read so far we can see that we have been eating (The Standard American Diet) for most of our lives, a diet that is very harmful not only to the digestive system but all systems in the body, for further proof that our way of eating is harmful. Look at the sales of the antacid companies whose sales are in the Billions of dollars every year.
Digestive System and Your Health
It’s sad to say that the American eating habits are very damaging to our health not only all the processed food we eat but, the way we eat food, and we don’t have to look very far to see the results. The sales of antacids are through the roof and the highest hospitals visits according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is digestive system difficulties and are “the primary cause of a hospital stays, surgical procedures, and disability in the U. S,” and impacts over 65 million Americans.
The Digestive System and Fruit.
Here is a little something that is incredibly beneficial for the digestive system. Fresh fruit should be consumed by itself the very first thing each morning. Reason behind this is when you wake up your system goes through its elimination cycle. This cycle comes to an end once you consume something which awakens the body’s digestive system juices in the stomach.
Fresh fruit is broken down while in the mouth and doesn’t awaken the stomachs full digestive system, consequently keeping the cleansing cycle going for a longer period. Once you’ve had your morning BM the cycle is over and you will have a more toxic free body instead of loading more toxins on top of toxins that are already there. I’ve learned that fruit basically is pre-digested. The digesting process for fresh fruit barely necessitates any of the digestive system enzymes, and is significantly less taxing on the body. As we all know that after eating a heavy or a meat and potatoes meal we feel tired, that’s because digestion of these kinds of meals takes a lot of energy which leaves little energy to get through the day without a (caffeine fix.)
